Introduction (Inicio; Ba kajjie)
Today the term "ghetto" is used in a variety of ways in slang lingo. It can mean something is awesome or cool, as in, "Hey Mrs. Turner, your Jeep is so ghetto, can I go for a ride?" Or, it can mean that something is worn out, distasteful, or of poor quality, such as, "Hey Mrs. Turner, those shoes are really ghetto, so throw them out already."
The term ghetto is also used today to describe a neighborhood that is run down, dirty, and low quality; a slum (gueto; oṃoja). These neighborhoods are usually filled with individuals living in economic poverty. And while this subject is an interesting study as well, it's not the ghetto that we are going to examine (examiner; allọk) today.
Since the Middle Ages groups of people have been forced into exile (exiliado; kalia) due to their political affiliations, nationality, or religion. Ghettos have been formed and used by those in power to dehumanize and control the undesirable citizens, who have suffered through starvation, alienation, and loss of freedom.
This WebQuest will allow you to research (investigación; etale) the Nazi ghettos from the 1940's; determine the reasons that led to their establishment; and their impact on both the Jews and free citizens. Then you will look for similar ghettos in existence today and what can we do to help educate our peers (grupo paritario; kewā) about them.
