PBL:
This WebQuest introduces the world problems of ethnic cleansing and genocide, through the examination of the ghettos created by the Nazi's during WWII. The students look at articles, primary documents, images, and videos (including oral histories) to learn about the events and atrocities carried out in the ghettos. Then they analyze some more recent episodes of ethnic cleansing and genocide in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Syria. The students create their own research questions, possible solutions to the problem, and suggest further research topics. They finish by creating a presentation product of their choice.
Students:
The students who completed this WebQuest had recently finished reading the novel Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli in my ELA class. Since I also teach social studies to this group of advanced students, I created this extension activity for them. There were eight, culturally diverse, seventh grade students in two groups. There was one male and seven female students participating. If used for a whole-class activity, more scaffolding needs to be included such as sentence stems for the research planner and K-W-L chart.
